The Lankan cricket board is trying to strengthen their batting. They have taken this move to sign up the former member Thilan Samaraweera as the new batting coach. Reports state that he will be contracted with the team until the next world cup.
Sri Lanka has been struggling in the recent past. The team had a horrible series against India and has lost the ODI and t20s with Pakistan as well. This has enforced the Sri Lankan management to make changes to their team.
Samaraweera has been a trusted middle order batsmen for Sri Lanka in Tests. He was into coaching after he retired from all formats in 2013. He went to Australia for some time and also spent time with Bangladesh as their batting Coach.
A series that has been confirmed with might team India, this will be a huge task on his shoulders as the batting coach. The Lankans will be playing 3 Tests, 3 ODI’s and 3 T20s.
He has an experience of over 80 tests, and his presence in the team will be of great help to the team. He also gained a lot of fame during the time he spent with Bangladesh as the Batting coach.
The former Sri Lankan cricketer started his career as an off-spinner. With Mutthaiya Murlidharan being the dominant performer in spin department at that time, he did not have the chance to continue as the major spinner. However, his consistent performances in Sri Lanka-A team with his batting made him earn a place in the team. He has also played alongside the legend Muralitharan. This 41 year old veteran also has 14 test match centuries under his bag. He would like to use all his experience to bring the Sri Lankan team back on track and might manage to win over team India.
Sri Lanka Cricket, however is yet to appoint a permanent head coach after Graham Ford parted his ways in June. Nic Pothas is in charge in the interim but board is currently in the process of appointing a successor and a permanent coach might be appointed most probably after the India series.
