Indian legend highly unimpressed with Ravichandran Ashwin's bowling

Indian cricket team’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been recently seen experimenting on bringing in a new variation to his arsenal by trying out leg spin in local cricket fixtures. Former spin legend Erapalli Prasanna, however did not seem much impressed with Ravichandran Ashwin‘s new move and believes that the variation did not suit his bowling in the longer version of the game and is not an excellent idea at this point of his career.

The 77-year old believes that Ravichandran Ashwin should stick to his game and should look to be focusing more on the art that had fetched him so many wickets over the years. Ravichandran Ashwin has been out of the limited overs squad for quite some time now and was even overlooked for the 6-match ODI series against South Africa in February. Prasanna believes that Ravichandran Ashwin has been trying out all these variations to win back his spot in the limited-overs side. He mentioned that these variations would not work for him in South Africa and went on to remark that the off-spinner should be knowing his strengths at this stage of his career and should not be experimenting too much.

“The changes which he (Ravichandran Ashwin) has made is not an encouraging sign for a five-day game. He must have felt that in limited-overs leg-spinners are succeeding and since he has been overlooked, he might be thinking that concentrating on leg-spin he might have a better chance of taking wickets and playing (limited-overs),”

Prasanna quoted, speaking exclusively to the IB Times.

“But he is doing this without realising that so late in his career if he changes from his main strength (off-spin), the selectors will not give way to him for ODIs and T20Is. Whatever change he is making will not suit for Test cricket because even a genuine leg-spinner is not consistent in a five-day game. And here is a makeshift leg-spinner who wants to do well. Unless he uses it (leg-spin) as a stock delivery, I don’t think it will be an excellent idea to change,”

Prasanna added.

On being asked about India’s chances in South Africa, Prasanna quoted that the visiting team would put up a good show in both the departments, leaving winning or losing aside.

“India will win or lose I don’t know but one thing for sure, they will definitely put up an excellent show, in terms of both batting and bowling,”

said former off-spinner.

Despite being out of the limited overs side for quite some time now,Ravichandran Ashwin is the first choice when it comes to playing the longest format. The off spinner has been one of the key members in the team’s success in test matches played at home. But the real challenge for Ravichandran Ashwin will be in pitches outside the subcontinent and the will have a point to prove when India begin their campaign in South Africa at Cape Town on January 5.
